Mrs. William H. Whipple Pet Cemetery to Close

BY DIANE MCCARTNEY

In a quiet, tree-lined field behind the Kansas Humane Society on Southeast Boulevard, 1,500 souls are laid to rest.

The graves are small, most of them marked with flat, 8-inch-by-6-inch stones.

Some are weather-worn and almost impossible to read. On others the names of the interred can clearly be seen: Duke. Sylvester. Pupsie. Snoopy. Whiskers.

The Mrs. William H. Whipple Pet Cemetery became the final resting place for hundreds of dogs and cats from its opening in the mid-1960s until it stopped accepting contracts for burials in the late '80s.

But when the Humane Society closes its 50-year-old facility and moves to a new campus planned near Hillside and K-96, the pet cemetery will also be closed.
