The Wichita area's unemployment rate shot up to 6.7 percent in March 2009 from 6.0 percent in February, its highest rate in five years, according to the Kansas Department of Labor.
Layoffs at aircraft plants and their suppliers have driven the rates up. The rate will likely rise again in April as another wave of aircraft and manufacturing workers given 60-day notices in February are laid off.
